Homeschool STEAM class

1. Today our home school STEAM students participated in a Bridge Test! They had already spent weeks designing, engineering and finally building their bridges from Popsicle sticks, to be able to finally test their strength today! Using 3.5 lb bags of sand students competed with their bridge designs to determine who's bridge held the most weight prior to collapse. Today we had a bridge sustand over 50 lb of weight prior to collapse! That is outstanding. Way to go Nancy Roberts for still having a strong bridge that failed to collapse at 50 plus lbs made from Popsicle sticks, glue and good design!  Way to go to John as runner up- his bridge sustained almost 50 lbs!

Music for children with autism and special needs

We serve over 500 students and about 20 percent of our students are on the spectrum or have special needs. We find great job in the victories we experience daily through working with these children as music is so healing for them. We have experienced teachers who are used to differentiated instruction and have patience and understanding. Why does music make your child smart and confident?

When you play the piano,  do you know you are using both sides of your brain simultaneously- the only activity that you can do to utilize right/ left function collaboratively. Music lessons have also been proven to increase and enhance brain function longterm in the developing brain of a child. Music also reiterates math as we learn division of bear, counting, and learn fractions wth whole, half, quarter and eighth notes. The subject of language is enhanced as we read a new 'language' and science comes to play as we discover how sound works and sound waves and vibration occur. We build confidence as children feel ownership over their ability to make music and play a familiar song independently or, if they are in an ensemble, team building occurs as you must listeb to one another to play successfully- and when you do that, you realize how much you must rely on each other.  And there's something magical that happens to a child when they sing like no ones listening, and begin to hear how their Voice can transform. I've taught kids who have had complete transformations in my studio simply by getting that chance, that opportunity, that ability to discover what's inside of them!! It's no surprise then to me why our music students become successful in life- music is the foundation!  And I am proud to be at the heart of it!

Tonight I had a great weekly vocal lesson with the awesome Miss Tori- one of my students who sadly moved away from our local area  but through our virtual school I am still able to coach her in  singing and her technique is continue to mature and is growing. She was in New Yodk in a blizzard tonight, whilst I instructed from sunny Florida. What a cool concept- and to think this talented young lady also auditioned for Broadway's School of Rock this weekend! Way to go and best of luck Tori!
